During the first visit, the patient’s personal and family history is assessed, and a family tree of at least three generations is constructed to infer the probable inheritance of the disease in the family. During the visit, the genetic basis of the disease, the inheritance pattern, the risks of having affected offspring or other family members being carriers, the genetic studies and technologies available to identify the genetic cause, reproductive options, the benefits and limitations of genetic studies, etc., are explained. This visit serves to address any questions the patient may have about the genetics of their disease.
