What does the test consist of?
The genetic test for histamine intolerance includes the analysis of three genetic variants associated with DAO deficiency and located in the gene that codes for this enzyme, the AOC1 gene. If variants are identified in this gene, it is concluded that the DAO deficiency is due to genetic causes and, therefore, hereditary. This is a noninvasive test performed on a blood or saliva sample. This test is used to differentiate whether the DAO deficiency is due to primary (genetic) or secondary (other pathologies or drug treatments) causes.

Do not eat, drink, chew gum, smoke, or brush your teeth 30 minutes before collecting the saliva sample.

What will you discover with the DAO test?
DAO deficiency, also known as histamine intolerance or food histaminosis, is characterized by a decreased ability to break down dietary histamine due to a reduction in the activity of the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO), which is responsible for metabolizing histamine. DAO deficiency is estimated to affect 12% of the population, with a higher prevalence in women. People with decreased activity of this enzyme accumulate high levels of histamine in their blood, increasing the likelihood of adverse effects such as migraines or gastrointestinal symptoms. DAO deficiency can be caused by genetic or pharmacological factors, or it may derive from other inflammatory bowel diseases.
The DAO deficiency genetic test analyzes genetic variants in the AOC1 gene, which codes for the DAO enzyme, related to decreased DAO activity and assesses whether the cause of histaminosis is genetic.
