What is the APOE gene genetic test?

The APOE gene test analyzes genetic variants associated with a higher or lower risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The APOE gene encodes a protein involved in lipid metabolism in the brain. There are three main variants of the gene: APOE ε2, ε3, and ε4, with the APOE ε4 variant being the one associated with the highest genetic risk.

The APOE ε4 variant is present in approximately 15% of the general population and in more than 50% of people with late-onset Alzheimer’s. However, carrying the variant does not mean that one will develop the disease, and not carrying it does not guarantee being free of risk. Therefore, this test should be understood as a screening tool, not a diagnostic one.

Object of study

We evaluate the genetic predisposition to celiac disease

The celiac disease genetic predisposition test focuses on two specific genes: HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by gluten ingestion in genetically susceptible individuals. The HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 genes encode histocompatibility proteins that play an important role in antigen presentation to immune system cells.

This test is used as a complementary diagnostic tool for people with symptoms of celiac disease. It can also be useful for first-degree relatives of patients with celiac disease to determine their genetic risk.
